was founded in 1999 as part of an online Dermatology resident education
resource. The organization was originally formed to assist resident
physicians by facilitating the exchange study materials, notes, etc.
After experiencing a demand for technology-related information (imaging,
digital cameras, handheld computers, etc.) currently being used in
the field of Dermatology, we created a resource to provide expert
opinion and review of commercially available, relevant software and
hardware products.
Since that time, we have assembled a team of dedicated individuals
and evolved from an educational content provider to an experienced
group of developers creating original web-based and handheld software
solutions. The founders have given over 20 invited lectures (nationally
and internationally) and continue to publish on various topics relating
to technology in Dermatology. Our original research and innovations
in the fields of imaging and data capture tools has been presented
at national meetings in Dermatology, Dermatologic Surgery, and Pathology.
We have also had the honor of partnering with the following organizations
to help promote their missions through the creation of automated software
solutions: American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, American Society
for Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, and the American College for Mohs
Micrographic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology.
Approximately one year ago, we organized as a Not For Profit (NFP)
foundation under the name of the Derm Education Foundation. This NFP
status more accurately reflects the organizational mission of derm.md.
The founders do not draw salary or other financial support from the
Derm Education Foundation.
Since our conception, we continue to develop educational software
and products which are provided free of charge to students, residents,
and physicians pursuing their education. We are constantly expanding
our software product line to support a larger user base, including
international students and practitioners of Dermatology. Often, universities
in underdeveloped countries lack the financial support to provide
adequate teaching resources (books and other materials). The founders
of this company have observed this first-hand during visits to medical
schools abroad. Our goals are to make these valuable resources available
free of charge to users both nationally and abroad. To achieve our
goals, we rely solely on funding from private sector, educational
grants, and philanthropic sources.
We are now offering services, such as website development and meeting/conference
administration automation. These are services sought after by our
supporters, and help draw revenue to help the company pursue its primary
goal of supporting Dermatology education through technology. With
continued support and growth, we ultimately hope to create a self-sustaining
endowment that will allow us to offer grants to individuals and organizations
sharing our vision. |
